Chandler, AZ – Cosmetology student Catalina Perez from the International Academy of Hair Design, 3350 N. Arizona Ave, Suite 4 in Chandler took second place in the Vidal Sassoon Cosmetology Student of the Year competition. More than 20 cosmetology schools in the Valley compete in the state competition, which is considered to be the most prestigious hair styling competition of the year.

Students must first win a hair cutting competition at their school, and the winners from each academy proceeded to the competition at the Vidal Sassoon Salon, 6961 E. 5th Ave. in Scottsdale. The students were judged on their technical ability, their use of color or perm, and the suitability of the cut to the model. The judges looked for a complete head to toe look with emphasis on healthy, shiny hair in the Vidal Sassoon tradition.

Competition even within the same school can be daunting. The same weekend Perez competed in Arizona, two teams from the Chandler school competed at the Hair Forum in Texas and captured second and third place in the team competition.

“There is no shortage of talent at our school,” said Leslie Emerson, director of Chandler cosmetology school. “In addition to an outstanding education, we encourage our students to use their imagination and create a phenomenal look that literally turns heads. We are very proud of Catalina for taking second place at the Vidal Sassoon competition, and to her fellow students who showcased their talents in Texas.”

“After three years of studying and preparation, Martha Rodriguez Hoffman, an instructor of Aesthetics at the International Academy, College of Aesthetics, in Tempe, became the first Spanish-speaking aesthetician in the state of Arizona to receive her CIDESCO diploma in Aesthetics.

The CIDESCO Diploma is the world's most prestigious qualification in the field of Aesthetics and Beauty Therapy. Since 1957 the CIDESCO qualification has set standards that have been imitated over the five continents of the globe.

Hoffman, an immigrant from Bogota, Colombia, began her career as a nail technician in Boston, MA. She opened her own day spa and learned English from her clients. After 14 years she sold her business and moved to Arizona with her husband, Stephen and daughters Erica and Christy. Once in the Valley, Hoffman honed her expertise in sales as an agent for a special skin care line from France.

“Martha has been very committed to be the very best in the Aesthetics field for herself, as well as her students,” said Jessica Wolman, one of the owners of the Aesthetics academy. “A successful career begins with great instruction, and Martha is the epitome of excellence in this field. She has worked very hard to obtain this diploma and we know her students, and the school, will continue to benefit from her expertise.”

Please join us in congratulating Martha on her achievement and her ongoing commitment to education!”
